What is barrel twist?
Inside a rifled barrel, the profile follows a spiral. It gives the bullet a spin around its lengthwise axis. This spin helps stabilise its orientation in flight, rather like a spinning top. In a conventional barrel, the recessed parts are called grooves and the raised parts between them are lands. Other internal profiles also exist, including polygonal shapes.

Twist rate describes the distance over which the profile makes one complete turn. A shorter distance is called a faster twist. Twist direction, by contrast, says whether it turns to the right or left. Weitschuss states twist lengths in millimetres.
Twist is not a quality rating. A particular twist rate proves neither exceptional precision nor suitability for every bullet shape. A technical assessment also considers the bullet’s shape, length and mass distribution, together with flight conditions. The cartridge name alone is therefore insufficient for a general conclusion.
