What does external ballistics study?
External ballistics describes a bullet’s flight between the muzzle and impact. Gravity acts downwards throughout the flight. In air, drag also acts on the bullet. It depends on factors including velocity relative to the air, air density and bullet shape.

The trajectory is the path through space. Flight time says how long that journey takes. Velocity and energy can change along the trajectory. Muzzle velocity and muzzle energy therefore describe only the starting region; they do not remain unchanged throughout flight.
A real trajectory is not simply the ideal parabola of a classroom problem without air resistance. Mathematical models represent events using particular simplifications. Many decimal places on a display do not prove equally accurate predictions. Uncertain inputs remain uncertain. A useful report therefore distinguishes measured conditions from assumptions. The cartridge name alone cannot establish a universal safe range.
