What does a rangefinder’s laser class tell us?

The laser class is a safety classification of the instrument. It considers factors including the type of laser light, accessible radiation and the duration of possible exposure. The class is not a ranking for image quality or measuring range.

An extra character in the name can matter. Class 1 and Class 1M, for example, are not the same. For classes with “M”, magnifying optical instruments can change the viewing conditions. Invisible laser light is not harmless simply because it cannot be seen. The specific product’s label and safety instructions are what matter.

An advertising claim such as “eye-safe” does not replace that information. Comparisons should identify the laser class, the version of the standard used and any stated restrictions. Classification applies to the complete instrument operated as intended. Opening the housing or altering protective features falls outside those normal conditions.
