How can precision and shooting performance be described clearly?

When several shots land close together, they form a small group. That does not necessarily mean the group is where it was intended to be. Imagine closely spaced dots beside the centre of a target: the dots are close together, but the whole group is off centre. A report should describe these two qualities separately.

Groups can be measured in different ways. A common measure is the greatest distance between the centres of two hits. Other methods consider the average distance from the group centre. The results of these methods are not directly equivalent. The number of shots and the treatment of unusually distant hits also matter.

One exceptionally small group does not prove performance that can be maintained consistently. A meaningful comparison states distance in metres / yards, numbers of shots and groups, ammunition, measurement method and test conditions. It also matters who took the measurements. Weitschuss distinguishes manufacturer claims, independent third-party tests and its own observations; it does not claim to have measured performance without conducting its own test.
