What is the difference between a stock, a chassis and bedding?

The stock connects the rifle’s action to the surfaces used to hold and support it. Traditional stocks may be made from wood or composite materials. A chassis is usually a load-bearing frame, often metal, to which parts such as the grip, buttstock and fore-end are attached. Hybrid designs also exist.

Bedding describes how the action is supported within the stock or chassis. This interface should behave as consistently as possible. The word initially describes that function; it does not automatically mean a particular material or an aftermarket modification.

Adjustable parts change the shape and position of contact surfaces. A large number of adjustments does not itself prove stability or durability. Useful comparisons consider the structural parts, materials, weight and adjustment ranges. Material alone does not determine precision either. An aluminium or carbon stock must always be considered together with the rest of the system.
