How should performance figures for different calibres be read?

Start a comparison with complete cartridge names. The same opening numbers can belong to different cartridges. Each designation also covers different ammunition versions, so a ranking based only on names or bullet diameter would be of little use.

Velocity tells you how fast the bullet moves. Energy also takes its mass into account. Neither figure alone proves greater precision. A comparison needs matching measurement points and test conditions. A muzzle figure should not be compared without explanation with a figure from later in flight.

“Range” can also mean different things: maximum flight distance, a manufacturer’s stated application range or a competition distance. These answer different questions. An energy value does not establish sporting eligibility. Competition class, available ranges and the complete system also matter. Larger cartridges are not an automatic improvement or an ascending shopping list.
