Are there long-range competitions for historical black-powder rifles?

Yes. Long-range target competitions exist for historical black-powder rifle designs. North American associations offer such formats. Depending on the event, different designs and classes are scored separately. The term “black powder” alone does not establish uniform eligibility rules.

These competitions have their own sporting tradition. They cannot simply be judged against the equipment standards of modern PRS or F-Class events. Requirements concerning rifle type, historical appearance and sights belong to the particular format.

Reports and event listings should therefore state the exact class and sporting rules. An original historical rifle and a modern reproduction may be classified differently. Distance and scoring are not determined by the label “black powder” either. This overview explains the family of disciplines; it does not cover loading or manufacturing procedures.
