ZEISS Outdoor becomes VALYRA: what the change of ownership on 1 October 2026 means for long-range shooters

The former ZEISS Hunting & Nature business has been run since 1 October by VALYRA GmbH in Aalen; the brand remains on the products under licence. The LRP series is affected too – as is the question of who is responsible for warranty and repair.

Industry · Analysis

Since 1 October 2026 the VALYRA GmbH, based in Aalen, has been running the former ZEISS Hunting & Nature business. According to ZEISS, the owner is the Munich investment company palero; the ZEISS brand remains on the products under a long-term licence. For precision shooters this is more than a report about a change of company name: it affects riflescopes, binoculars, spotting scopes and thermal imaging devices, and therefore also the LRP (Long Range Precision) series – and the question of who is responsible for the warranty and repair of existing devices.

The key points

– Completion on 1 October 2026. On 30 September 2026 ZEISS announced that from that day the outdoor business operates as the independent VALYRA GmbH in Aalen. The managing director is Stefan Hämmerle, previously head of ZEISS Hunting & Nature (manufacturer's statement).
– Signing on 24 February 2026. According to the ZEISS release of 26 February 2026, palero becomes the sole owner, with ZEISS contributing technology and brand as a licensing partner.
– Around 260 employees, about 100 of them in Aalen. So reports the Schwäbische Zeitung (Robert Schwarz, 8 October 2026), citing a spokeswoman; around 90 per cent came from the ZEISS division. ZEISS itself names no employee figure.
– The brand stays, the operator changes. The ZEISS product pages for precision shooting identify VALYRA as the exclusive licensee; ZEISS and the logo remain trademarks of Carl Zeiss AG.
– Service continues through the familiar addresses. The checked manufacturer sources do not name the warranty period or the warranty provider.

A carve-out, not a renaming

The process is often abbreviated to a renaming. That misses the point. According to the ZEISS release of 26 February 2026, Hunting & Nature was transferred into a legally independent company whose sole owner is palero – an investment fund from Munich focused on carve-outs in the German Mittelstand. Completion had been announced for the second half of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals; the timetable was kept. Gun Trade World (Rob Smith, 5 March 2026) likewise names no licence term. Several specialist media have taken over the manufacturer's information; those are not independent confirmations.

Product areas, locations, manufacturing

The manufacturer's statements name as product areas binoculars, spotting scopes, riflescopes, thermal imaging devices, trail cameras and digital applications. For 2026 ZEISS names the Conquest Apia 65 spotting scope and a V3 riflescope developed for the US market, and for 2027 products in four categories. VALYRA names no manufacturing of its own: according to the spokeswoman, production runs through a network of international manufacturing partners.

Oberkochen remains the headquarters of Carl Zeiss AG and is not a VALYRA location; insidebw.de (Tobias Baumann, 3 October 2026) uses the main building there only as a symbolic image. According to the Schwäbische Zeitung, Aalen-Attenhofen brings together management, development, marketing, sales and IT. Wetzlar, the traditional sports optics location, appears as a repair and logistics centre and service address.

The LRP series: figures by variant

For distances from 300 m / 328.1 yrd, the LRP series is the relevant ZEISS product. It works in the first focal plane (FFP), the reticles ZF-MRi (MRAD) and ZF-MOAi (MOA) are illuminated, and the click value is 0.1 MRAD or 0.25 MOA respectively (manufacturer's figures).

The variants must be kept apart. According to the manufacturer, the LRP S3 636-56 (6–36×56) offers 32.0 MRAD / 110 MOA of elevation and 14.6 MRAD / 50 MOA of windage adjustment at 100 m / 109.4 yrd, weighs 1,107 g / 39.1 oz without the internal rail and measures 384 mm / 15.1 inches with a 34 mm / 1.34 inch tube. The LRP S5 525-56 (5–25×56) offers 40.7 MRAD / 140 MOA of elevation adjustment, weighs 1,030 g / 36.3 oz and measures 396 mm / 15.6 inches with the same main tube.

On the windage adjustment of the S5 the manufacturer's sources contradict each other: the product page names 24 MRAD / 60 MOA, while the data sheet from 2022 names 17.45 MRAD / 60 MOA. By calculation, 60 MOA correspond to about 17.45 MRAD; 24 MRAD does not fit that. The data sheet moreover does not assign its column values unambiguously to the four variants; the model pages are authoritative. Figures for the S3 and S5 series must not be mixed.

Market position between retail and competition

Two third-party reports are available. Christopher Hocke tested both series for all4shooters.com (24 July 2023, also VISIER 5/2023) and named RRPs of 2,700 euros for the S3 636-56 and 4,200 euros for the S5 525-56; he highlights the large adjustment range and criticises the unscaled parallax. David Lane assigned the LRP S3 6-36×56 to the PRS Production Class for RECOIL (13 March 2026), whose US price limit is 2,500 US dollars; the model sits there at an RRP of 2,500 US dollars. These prices are several years old.

A counterpoint comes from competition. On 2 November 2026 Cal Zant of PrecisionRifleBlog published the equipment survey on the 2026 IPRF World Championship (24 to 27 September 2026 near Lipan, Texas): Kahles 23 per cent, Zero Compromise 20, Leupold 15, Nightforce 10 per cent; according to the author these four account for 69 per cent of the shooters who named a brand. Importantly, he names as the basis more than 260 participants from 24 countries, but no case number per question; the values apply only to the shooters covered there. ZEISS appears with no percentage figure, only in the brand overview.

Our own assessment: the LRP series is present in European retail and in the US Production Class, but is not a determining presence at the top of international PRS. The change of ownership does not alter that for now, but it does decide who will be responsible for this niche's development budgets in future.

Assessment for shooters in Germany, Austria and Switzerland

In practice much stays the same for now: products still carry the ZEISS name, distribution runs through specialist dealers, and the ZEISS product pages name no list price for the LRP series. Documented delivery times or stock levels for Germany, Austria and Switzerland are not available from manufacturer sources.

On warranty and service for existing devices, the position as at 6 November 2026 is documented: the ZEISS hunting service page names, for Germany and Austria, Carl Zeiss Sports Optics GmbH in 35576 Wetzlar, and for Switzerland Carl Zeiss AG in 8714 Feldbach. According to that page, warranty handling also runs through authorised specialist dealers; it names no warranty period. The repair page for precision shooting requires proof of purchase in warranty cases and identifies VALYRA as the responsible company.

Our own assessment: anyone who owns an LRP, Victory, Conquest or thermal imaging device should keep the proof of purchase safe and initiate repairs through the official route. Responsibility has formally passed to a new company, even though the addresses appear unchanged.

What is open

– Licence term and scope. All checked sources speak of a long-term brand licence; none names a term, termination rights or a transitional period.
– The status of precision shooting. The ZEISS releases describe the transferred area as hunting, nature and bird watching; they do not name the LRP series, although its product pages carry the VALYRA legal notice.
– Warranty conditions. The warranty period, the warranty provider and the treatment of devices from before 1 October 2026 are unclear.
– Purchase price and key figures. The purchase price, turnover and result have not been published; the Schwäbische Zeitung states the price as confidential.
– Product care for the LRP series. Successors or revisions are not documented; the announcement for 2027 names no long-range model. A test report or an updated product page does not prove a product is new.
– Contradiction on the windage adjustment of the LRP S5 525-56. The discrepancy between 24 MRAD and 17.45 MRAD at an identically stated 60 MOA is unresolved.
